This is a list of gear I use to day hunt bear either from home or a base camp. After years of solo hunting the Rocky Mountains, hiking and camping these are my best recommendations.

Backpack

Clothing

Hunting clothing with merino wool blend and a waterproof outer layer. In the spring when most bear hunts take place rain is common and temps can drop low at night. It is important for this reason to have a waterproof outer and good base layers. I also like to pack gloves and wear waterproof boots with gaiters. I prefer Pnuma Outdoors clothing.

Trekking Poles

When in the backcountry I feel having good trekking poles is a must. I have found they increase my endurance and keep me from falling when carrying a heavy load. I like the Black Diamond Carbon Alpine poles.

Boots

When it comes to keeping my feet happy, warm and dry I trust and use Kenetrek boots and no they don’t give me boots. I wish. I like 400gram boots for bear hunting.

Socks

I swear by merino wool socks as they keep my feet warm even if they get wet better than synthetics. Always keep a dry pair in your pack!

Headlamps

Having good lighting is important not only for safety but also for skinning an animal in the dark. I like the Black Diamond headlamps. I usually keep two in my pack because “two is one and one is none.”
