CZ 457 Hunter Veil Review: Range Results, Features and Verdict
Is the CZ 457 Hunter Veil good or garbage? We took it to the range to find out. This review covers the fit, feel and function, accuracy results and the reviewer’s opinions on this .22 LR bolt-action rifle.
Quick Verdict
This is the nicest, best .22 LR rifle for hunting the reviewer has ever had. It shoots phenomenally, cycles smoothly, looks great, and is a joy to shoot. It makes an excellent rabbit, squirrel and varmint rifle, and you can put a suppressor on it. The only real complaint is the narrow 11 mm dovetail scope base.

Accuracy Test
The rifle was tested with several .22 LR loads at 50 yards, shooting five-shot groups. Brand-new out of the box, the tighter groups measured about 0.67 inch at 50 yards. The Eley Benchrest Precision semi-auto ammo was the favorite of the loads tested. The reviewer expects it could easily reach half-inch groups with more break-in time and different ammunition, and even shot a 200 yard steel target using Kentucky holdover with a hunting scope.
Stock, Grip and Controls
- A very hard recoil pad (basically a piece of plastic), which doesn’t matter on a .22
- Soft-touch polymer stock that stays grippy when wet, with a beefy grip that flares at the bottom
- Large threaded bolt handle (swappable), Cerakoted to match the receiver and barrel
- Single-position safety: rearward is safe, forward is fire
- Fore end slightly wider and boxier than an older Gen 1 Ruger American, giving a better purchase on the rifle
- Rear sling swivel stud and two front sling swivel studs on the fore end
What Could Be Better
The reviewer wants a larger magazine release for an easier grip, and says the 11 mm wide dovetail scope base makes it hard to find quality scope rings. A Picatinny rail or a threaded base would fix that.
Scope on This Rifle
The rifle was topped with a Leupold VX-Freedom 4-12×40 with a 1 inch tube, open tactical turrets (1/4 MOA clicks), a locking adjustable eyepiece, and a hard anodized, waterproof and fogproof finish. Leupold also offers a custom CDS turret matched to your ballistics with most of its scopes.
